Good afternoon folks - my 1gb went live yesterday, failing to get much over 250 though despite a new cat 8 cable direct to router and a new gigabit ethernet card so stumped

Do this...
________

As you expect >100Mbps then connect a 1GB enabled computer/laptop, with up to date drivers, via a NEW and working Cat5e/6a or higher ethernet cable, directly to the Hub which you have put into “modem mode”

This ensures that NO other devices are connected

Test speeds at https://speedtest.samknows.com/ - try on 2 different browsers as Chrome sometimes gives odd results.

If they are still low – boot your device into Windows safe+networking mode - to disable any potentially interfering software - and try again.
There are many posts on here (I have a list of ~30!) where QoS software, anti-virus, unknown/flaky software, old network card drivers, corrupted browsers, bad cables or other connected devices are limiting speeds on tests.

Report back what that gets.

For examples of why... see message 7 in the first thread and 9 in in the second and 3 in the third

A have had one or two brand new Cat6 cables fail within a week - was a bad batch apparently - snapped wire in the connector - Cat8's are not totally immune from that too 🙂

Just click the 3 links in my post and see if anything in there rings any bells 🙂

Hopefully someone from Virgin will pick this up - the test router option online says there is an issue with the router

They get to posts after a few days. They will start by looking at the Hub and connection data - so you could post that up here now so we can see if we can spot the issue.

Up to speed
Have you checked what speed the hub is actually receiving you can do this by going to https://samknows.com/realspeed/
the other samknows url does not tell you the speed going to the hub itself
