P2P/torrent throttling and general instability

BradDodi
On our wavelength

Hi,

I'm a new customer (have had Virgin Media broadband in the past) and I'm suffering from some odd instability when downloading torrents and in general. Not sure if the problems are related.

Firstly when I'm downloading a torrent the whole connection will throttle to the point where it's not usable, not just the torrent download but the whole internet connection via both wired and wifi. The torrent will download at a few kbps so it's not using the full 500mbps and therefore causing a bandwidth issue... though pausing the torrent will immediately fix the issue and the connection returns to normal. Seems to be identical to this? https://community.virginmedia.com/t5/Speed/Virgin-Media-throttling-P2P/td-p/4142828

Throughout the day I'm also getting intermittent connection drops. Has been happening since I signed up.

Any help would be appreciated!

If you have allowed 100% upload for the Torrent Client then your download will crawl so will your other PC usage, limit it to a Max of about 80-85%

BradDodi
On our wavelength

Yes, I've done this but it doesn't make any difference. The torrent never has much upload speed at all because it cannot download fast enough (kbps).

Anyone have any ideas about this?

Do the stats I included previously seem OK?

Ho there @BardDodi,

Cheers for popping back - I am sorry that you're having these issues. Is it just when you are doing torrents or when you are just browsing the internet or using a steaming service too?

I have been able to locate your account from your forum information and I can see that you are currently impacted by a known area issue. This was raised under reference number F008056176 and the estimated fix date is 27th May 2020 - until this is passed we can only do a bare minimum checks I'm afraid.

If you are still having the issue after the area issue has been resolved, we can go ahead and do more in depth checks with you 🙂

I can see it has been around 3 weeks since your last reboot of the Hub so that would be the first thing we would need to do. See how things go and pop back with some updates when you can.

Cheers

Hi, just replying again because I'm still struggling with the same issues. It's just when downloading torrents, when browsing the internet and using a streaming service it works fine. If I start a torrent it downloads at a max of 300kbps (usually much below this) and the whole connection throttles. It becomes unusable until I pause/cancel the torrent.

Any ideas?

Hi BradDodi,

Thanks for coming back to us. My apologies for the broadband issues.

There is a congestion issue in your area affecting the service. F008056176 is the number for your records. The estimated fix date is the 17th June 2020.

Kind regards,

Which VPN are you using?

Which Protocol?

Is there any update for the issue? It cant be related to a certain area only as this excuse sounds pretty dumb to me. Im from RM16 area and experiencing the same. Under consumer rights and per contract VM IS NOT TO THROTTLE speed of any sorts. Can you please explain whats going on please?
