M350 wifi

I've just got the m350 wifi with speeds of 362mbps. The speed it's not meant to drop below is 181mbps.

I'm currently getting 30-40mbps. I've reset the router, and done everything else listed online. Nothing has improved it.

Is anyone else having this same issue? Doesn't seem worth the extra money if I'm not going to get the speeds I've been promised. I'm hesitant to call virgin because the line is awful, and paired with the language barrier, it's just a headache. I've called previously and they didnt do anything I asked. So it just seems pointless. Is there another way of contacting virgin?

Re: M350 wifi

You are "promised" speeds on ethernet cable connected devices, not over wifi.
How you are testing speeds - on what devices?

Re: M350 wifi

OK - try it exactly this way then....
Make sure your PC has a gigabit network NIC card (not a 10/100 one or one “limited to that) and has the up to date drivers. Use a new Cat6 ethernet cable (old ones do "fail" and Cat6 is best) to connect it directly to the Hub - which you have put into modem mode (to ensure only your PC is connected). Check speeds like that first.
If they are still low - then, boot up the PC into "safe mode with networking" (to disable any software on it that could be limiting speeds). Run the tests at speedtest.net (try on VM servers) on different browsers one of which is a fresh download of one you haven’t previously used (e.g. Firefox, Opera, Safari etc - there are several reports on here of certain browsers causing speed issues).

Try that and report back what you get.

BTW - it isnt a Dell by any chance is it ? If so switch of the SmartBytes App.

I'm not being funny, but A I'm still not getting the right speeds, and B this seems like a lot of effort just to get what I'm paying for

Re: M350 wifi

Point is - you have no idea what speeds you are getting. You are testing over wifi which can be affected by many external influences as a cursory search of this forum will reveal and as I said VM do not guarantee speeds over wifi.
If you dont want to make any efforts to discover what speeds you are actually getting or troubleshoot reasons, then just get the VM "Connect" App and use it to test your speeds and find dead spots - if it does then you can order wifi boosters - which they may or may not charge you for. See if they help.

Re: M350 wifi

I'm not testing over wifi. I'm testing with an ethernet cable. I do know the speeds I'm getting. The speed is consistently testing at 30-40mbps. I'm paying for 181-362mbps. I could of got 30-40 with talk talk.

My point is, why promise speeds they cant deliver. And the investigation side really shouldn't be down to me. Regardless of that, I've still tried everything that has been recommended to me, from here and virgin them selves. Surely if nothing is improving the speeds then there must be an outside fault?

Re: M350 wifi

Apologies - I misread it.

An ethernet speed of 30-40mbps instead of 350 could be due to many reasons. Its possible that there is a fault with the VM "supply" - if you call it in as a fault they will test you connection and see whether it is working at the agreed speeds - it is the first port of call and you may be lucky and get a "good" agent. If they say yes we see a problem then they will instigate a fix.

Another option is just to wait on here for a day or two for a VM mod to intervene who can do that test test and check for known faults and advise.

If they say its fine - then the problem may lay at your end - hence my suggestions. You say you have done everything VM recommended - well the first thing they normally say is to test with the Hub in modem mode and then with the device in "safe boot" - but you said that was a lot of effort - so I assume you haven't?
The reason for doing this is that the device you are using (PC/Laptop? what exactly is it) may not be actually Gigabit enabled - i.e capable of receiving the speeds being delivered.
For example - the ethernet cable you are using - if old - may be faulty (they do fail) so try a new good quality Cat6 one. The device may only have a 10/100 NIC card rather than a GB one. The drivers for the NIC may be out of date and limiting speeds. You may have software running that limits speeds e.g. QOS, some antiviral packages, a corrupt browser, or if a Dell - SmartBytes (see below).
You could also do a double check by getting someone with a known GB capable laptop who gets good speeds to drop round and see if their device can get the faster speeds.

These are things you need to check to get to the bottom of any speed issues if they say the connection is fine. I have listed some of these that have been found on here over the last year or so in case you want to take a look.....
