Re: How soon can we upgrade to Gigabit/Gigabit speeds over DOCSIS 3.1? #Gigaworld #ProjectLightning

So here we are. Southampton first, being joined by Reading and Manchester.

Obviously these are hubsites rather than just town/city so Southampton serves those with sotn in their IP address, Manchester manc and Reading rdng.

This does mean the coverage may extend outside the towns and cities and that it may not cover all of them. Manchester for instance has multiple hubsites besides just manc and Reading covers a wide area encompassing Reading, Basingstoke, Wokingham, Bracknell and other towns.

Either way there's the start with much more to come in 2020.

Everyone say thank you to Openreach for getting serious with FTTP: that's what's forced VM to move on 3.1.

Exciting. Do you have a link to anything official? (News article etc)

Edit: Found it https://www.ispreview.co.uk/index.php/2019/05/named-virgin-medias-possible-1gbps-broadband-uk-launch...

Yep, that. No way I was going to spill until it had been made public. Smiley Happy

Do you think it would include .bagu (area 20), or is there no way of knowing yet?

Actually it's Baguley that'll be the site I imagine. I used the wrong code and was thinking of the core site rather than the hubsite. Baguley is where the equipment is for much of Manchester's cable modems.

Thanks for pulling me up on it.

Fantastic news as you say it looks like openreach have made Virgin move a little faster on 3.1 as we moved into our new home and it has FTTP plus G.Fast has been rolled out in some parts of this area too. now let’s hope uddingston will be enabled in 2020

Yeah it's not so much the new build properties but the Openreach fibre first projects that have gotten their attention.

The BT family just need to get the pricing of the 500Mb and 1Gb down to something more sane and it'll be a really scary one for VM.

Vodafone, Hyperoptic, etc, blow VM away.

Vodafone, Hyperoptic, etc, blow VM away.“

Price / performance ratio, maybe.

Coverage, surely not yet.

But presumably these would have to converge in time? Isn’t Docsis 3.1 VM’s next step up on the performance challenge?

And as(/if) the others increase their coverage then surely VM would have to compete commercially?

Competition has got to be good for the consumer.

It really won't I'm afraid, not for a long, long time!
