[HELP] Wired connection slow but wireless fast? (550Mbps Wireless) & (130Mbps Wired)??!!

Ripp
Up to speed

My Virgin Media fiber connection has been a rock solid 550Mbps for nearly 1 year but for the last 3 days on my wired connection it's just 130Mbps. My phone still gets 550Mbps over a wireless connection (right next to the Hub).

I've tried both a desktop PC and a laptop with a wired connection and gotten near enough the same result so I can rule out my hardware so it must be a problem with the VM Hub's wired connection somewhere?

Any ideas?

SOLVED! I turned out it was a problem my end. For whatever reason I had to reset my network adapter settings on my wired PC. The low speed results I was getting with the wired laptops must have just been a coincidence as they are old laptops.

For reference it's: Windows Start Menu/Settings/Network & Internet/Network Reset

Just to add for anyone else trying to diagnose exactly what part of a network is causing speed issues, it's worth buying an Ethernet to USB-C (or whatever USB your mobile phone has) for about £10 from the Rainforest. As it essentially turns your phone into a network speed meter.

I bought a USB-C 1Gbps one and I use the Ookla speed test app so now I can just plug it into any port or ethernet cable that's connected to the internet and it'll do a speed test. By process of elimination I can now narrow down what's at fault. If I'd have had that a week ago I would have avoided having to take a day off work and wait around for 4hrs for a VM engineer to come out.

It could be... but more likely that the ethernet cable has "failed" - I have had several do that over the years. First swap it for a new Cat6a one and see if that helps. If not it could be the ports - several recent posters have reported a similar failure. Do any of the Hub Ports give a better connection?

I do not work for VM. My services: HD TV on VIP (+ Sky Sports & Movies & BT sport), x3 V6 boxes (1 wired, 2 on WiFi) Hub5 in modem mode with Apple Airport Extreme Router +2 Airport Express's & TP-Link Archer C64 WAP. On Volt 350Mbps, Talk Anytime Phone, x2 Mobile SIM only iPhones.

I've just this minute tried all the ports and tried multiple cables as I have 4x genuine VM Cat6 cables so I can rule that out.

No matter what ethernet port or cable I use this is what I get:

Desktop PC = 130Mbps (every time it's tested)
Old Laptop = 200-260Mbps
New NHS Laptop = 170-200Mbps

And several wireless devices still get 550Mbps over wireless.

try a full reset - hold the button a good 30 sec - dont turn off after that let the hub boot up and then retest

worth posting some stats although they should be ok if you have the wifi speed

log into hub3 - 192.168.0.1 [or 192.168.100.1 if in modem mode] - DON'T SIGN IN, click - click router status [centre of screen] - and post the downstream and upstream figures - to see those press on the grey buttons/boxes labelled - upstream - downstream

if its an earlier hub button is top right

Will a full reset lose any settings I have in the hub?

levels are good and yes a reset will set everything back to default so you need to make a note of them

not sure if you can back them up - long time since i looked

I'll screenshot all the hubs settings and try a reset then. I'm currently on VM's Live Chat but obviusly I'm in a massive queue after jumping through all their 'support' hoops. Is it worth me logging off of the Live chat and doing the Hub reset or is Live Chat likely to be able to sort something out?

You can save your config file as a .bin (it's under advanced - system / Admin (or similar)

lol too late, just done the reset. Good to know though for next time!
