Gig1 not at Gigabit Speeds and ethernet is much slower than the WiFi

Good afternoon all,

Issue

I have just moved to Virgin Media with a brand new install in my area and I have opted for the Gig1 broadband speeds. Since the install (Yesterday), I have only once managed to achieve a speed at 500mb. The average is between 200-400 on WiFi and 100-200 on Ethernet.

Equipment I am using

I have tried this on numerous devices. I have tried Ethernet on a Lenovo Thinkpad X280 with a Thunderbolt 3 Gen 2 dock, both with 10/100/1000 ethernet. I have also tried ethernet on a 2020 Intel i5 MacBook Air with a 10/100/1000 usb c to ethernet connector. I have also tried wifi on the above, and an iPhone 12, and an iPad Pro 2.

What I have tried

For ethernet, I have tried numerous cables connected directly into the hub 4. I have tried cat5e, cat6 and cat7 cables, all give the same 100-200mb speeds. I have also tried 3 different ethernet usb c adapters.

I have tried the router in both router and modem mode, but no difference in speed. I have done a full pin hole reset, and also rebooted the router a number of times.

I have tried to use SamKnows Real Speed but this is not working? Screenshot 2021-07-15 at 15.22.11.png

I will post all the log details below also. I have also set up a BQM -

https://www.thinkbroadband.com/broadband/monitoring/quality/share/8cebecaa39bac10d5c063d03a974704c4a...

There is a chance I am being too hasty, and it will get better over time, but I am no where near the Gig1 speeds!

Quick update:

I have turned the SH4 into modem mode, and connected a TP-Link Archer AX20 Wifi 6 router in.

This has given me some ethernet speeds that are slightly faster (300mbps) and wifi speeds closest to the router of 600mbps.

Is there any reason the ethernet it still much slower than the wifi?

Its always odd when ethernet is slower then wifi but is it from the same device? likely its the device and may need reinstalling don't use a AV they may slow you down.

With your own router try disabling the QoS

SamKnows Real Speed only works in router mode so its odd that that too is not working maybe because your speeds are bad that its not letting you do the test?

---------------------------------------------------------------

Hi Legacy1,
It certainly is strange.

I have tried turning off my antivirus. One laptop has a VPN for work but even disabling that has no effect. I have tried both WiFi and Ethernet comparatively on all devices possible with the same result, WiFi is always faster.

With my router, QoS is disabled, only ever me at home during the day so I don’t particularly see the benefit of it 🙂

and I did try Sam knows in router mode on all my devices but it still didn’t find it, which does make me wonder if there is potentially a small fault in the hub4?

I mean it all works for now with no huge issue, but would love for speeds closer to what I pay for and a better ethernet connection 🙂

many thanks for your responses!

Hi BethAE,

Thanks for your post and welcome to the forums. It's really great having you on board with us in the Community.

I'm really sorry to hear that you are having issues getting a connection with the higher speeds.

Taking a look a the Hub stats, it is bringing up a pro-longed signal issue. I can see that some of your power levels are borderline too so I would like to arrange for an engineer to come out to get these resolved. Once those are sorted, if you are still having an issue, we can look further into things then.

I just need to confirm the address to ensure we are booking the visit on the correct account. I have sent you a private message regarding this. Just click on the little plum envelope at the top right hand side of the page to access your inbox.

Thanks,
