Hi,
I'm on GIG1. My average download speeds are around 700Mbps (Should get nearer 1Gig as the package name suggests but thats for another time). I get 800Mbps on a good day. (Via speedtest.net - no other speedtest website gets anywhere near close to what my speed should be)
This means I should be downloading from steam etc at a rate of at least 60-70MB/s.
I get around 25MB peak download speeds from steam. I've tried changing servers - Manchester server is closest to me but very poor speed wise. The best speeds I get are from the Sweden Malmo server.
I thought it must just be the steam download servers running slowly but me and my friend downloaded the same game at the same time and he was getting 110MB peak (Talk talk UFO FTTP) & I was getting 25/30 Peak. (He pays £25 a month. I pay £62)
This has been going on since I've had Virgin. Same with the other download servers. I get really poor download speeds compared to my connection coming in.
I'm wired directly into my PC with a Cat6 cable. My HUB4/router is next to my PC. I'm currently running in modem mode with a Netgear Nighthawk but have tried both ways and it doesn't make a difference. PC more than capable of high bandwidth speeds. No other traffic on my network when carrying out these tests.
Samknows said my speed coming into my router was 1100 when not in modem mode but the speed going out never went above 100 so I didn't really trust what it was saying. I can't test samspeed since using my Netgear router as it isn't compatible.
I'm convinced that there are some network restrictions somewhere.
Not sure what to suggest, I will post my upsteam/downstream results if there is anything in there which anybody can see that doesn't look right.
I see these posts quite often with no resolve but its frustrating because I may as well reduce my broadband package to something smaller because I've not found one server that gives me the full potential of my package.
Appreciate you listening to me rambling. Any advice would be appreciated.

It depends on the load between Virgins servers and steam servers, Virgin has about 5 million broadband customers of which a lot will be using Steam where the TalkTalk UFO service isn't very common and demand between TalkTalk's servers and steam will be much lower as the services the generally sell are slower.
You connection stats look fine for the service, its also worth noting that currently CDN (Contend Delivery Networks) are very busy with the demand of everybody being at home consuming bandwidth so achieving speeds over long distances is expected to be impacted.

Hi, thanks for the reply.

Here are the results for the speed test. Very underwhelming and at 00:40 at night so hardly peak times with no other bandwidth usage.
Cheers

Very underwhelming indeed .... Have you had an engineer visit to look at these issues yet.
Could you run this test and share results https://samknows.com/realspeed/

Not had an engineer visit yet as I'm sure I'd just get some excuse as to why its fine.
So the samknows test only works when I disable modem mode and connect directly to the router.
I've just done this and got similar results to when I first got Gig1.
I'm sure I've read somewhere that Samknows is owned by Virgin media though.
I really take those results with a pinch of salt. My "speed to the computer" has never once gone above 100Mbps on there. Which doesn't make sense.

Your 3.1 downstream channel should be QAM4096, this is why you are not getting your full speed. You will need an engineer visit to put this right. Best to ring VM on or just after 8am or alternatively you can wait here for a Virgin staff member to pick it up, typically between 5-10 days, sometimes sooner, sometimes later depending on how busy they are.

On my 1Gig service i am getting 945Mbps, thats due to the maxing out of ethernet on CAT5e.
Origin / Steam / PSN download a hell of a lot faster than 6 months ago...
