Erratic Speeds - Frequently halves from 360mb to 150mb

Connected laptop to VM router in Modem Mode using an Ethernet Cable and very occasionally get 369mb but more often get half that at 150mb. Losing half of my speed.

Using Win10 Speedtest.net app (not a browser)

Re: Erratic Speeds - Frequently halves from 360mb to 150mb

There are many things that can affect your speed. Obviously you've ruled out wifi by connecting with a cable. Running a speed test against the same set of servers over and over again will give you different results every time, that's just the nature of a network.

Apologies if I'm telling you something you already know but you will commonly experience slower speeds at peak times because there is only so much capacity on the network. The capacity is built for a percentage of peak demand rather than to meet peak demand fully, the reason being that it's an expensive network to build and run and putting in all that capacity for a few hours a day makes bad financial sense. For the customer it means that at peak times (late afternoon and early evening) you are unlikely to get your maximum advertised speed but the pay-off is that you're not paying stupid money for your internet connection. If you want guaranteed speeds all the time you can get that but you'll pay over £300 per month for a 100mbit leased line and it won't improve the speed of what you're connecting to at the other end which is the other important factor. You can have a 350mbit connection to Virgin's network but if the website you're requesting is hosted on a cheap and nasty $1 a month host in the US you may as well be talking down a piece of string with yoghurt pots on either end.

Anyway, your upstream levels look ok. What do the downstream look like?
