If you are out of contract, give them a call as you could get it for less as I regularly see those deals whenever I look at my VM account online.

I was on 350mb and I recontracted at the beginning of last month and it cost me an extra £3.00 a month to get upgraded to 500mb.

No.  Order a cheap O2 contract sim and get Volt upgrade for "free".  At least you'll be getting something extra for the money you're paying.

As #2 above.  If you aren't going to use the extra speed it will be a good deal for Virgin, not so much for you.

Hmm seems poor compared to new customer price difference.

£38 500
£41 Gig1

So £6 gap from 350 to 1000, you got £7 gap from 350 to 500.  Do more haggling. 🙂
