1gig internet, 500mb max download

Hi. I recently upgraded to 1gig from M200 however I am only seeing download of 500mb on speed test.net / google speed test

https://samknows.com/realspeed/ shows 344Mbpss to my computer but interestingly does suggest I am getting the correct speeds to my router 1144Mbps

I have pin reset the router but that didn't change anything and I am using Cat 6 Cables to connect to the router.

Any ideas how I can achieve speeds closer to 1gig? I appreciate I might not get that exactly but half that amount is a little annoying.

Regards,

Tom

Is that on Chrome? There have been a few threads recently where that gave ~500 and Firefox ~940.

Test speeds this way

Connect a 1GB enabled computer/laptop, with up to date drivers, via a NEW and working Cat5e/6a ethernet cable, directly to the Hub which you have put into “modem mode” (https://www.virginmedia.com/help/virgin-media-hub-modem-mode ). This ensures that NO other devices are connected

Test speeds at https://speedtest.samknows.com/ - try on 2 different browsers as Chrome sometimes gives odd results.

If they are still low – boot your device into Windows safe+networking mode - to disable any potentially interfering software - and try again.

There are many posts on here (I have a list of ~30!) where QoS software, unknown/flaky software, old network card drivers, corrupted browsers, bad cables or other connected devices are limiting speeds on tests.

Report back what that gets.

A couple of examples why... see message 9 in the first thread and… 3 in the second

Hi. Thanks for the quick responses - I have been busy so unable to respond until now.

The only ethernet enabled device in my house is this computer which is on a different floor to the router and quite difficult to move so I haven't done the modem only test.

I did try firefox + OVH Cloud and got a variety of results based on browser and speed test. I'm really confused by the Sam Knows test - as that suggests my computer is getting about a third of the available download speed?

These tests are a snapshot and will vary each time you run them:

Chrome:

Speentest.net - 398Mbps down / 52 Mbps up

Sam Knows - 1144Mbps to router / 218Mbps to computer

OVH Cloud - 937 Mb/s down / 54Mb/s up

Firefox:

Speentest.net - 758 down / 52 up

Sam Knows - 1144 to router / 351 to computer

OVH Cloud - 661 down / 52 up

This is my point exactly.

No speed test site / web browser shows the same speed.

Having said that OVH Cloud (https://proof.ovh.net/) on Chrome appears to be the most consistent for me.

Good Afternoon @TomPoke, thanks for your post.

Have you been able to take any further speed tests since your post?

Can you please confirm if any of the tests have been taken whilst the hub is in modem mode?

Kindest regards,

David
