1Gig Package - Recieving 100MB!?

I have been having problems with my broadband for some time now. I used to be on the 500MB package but only ever received around 70MB via WI-FI.

Today, I switched to 1Gig and installed the Hub 4 router. I am now only getting 100MB - 150MB from the 1Gig.

We have had 2 technicians out so far, and had the cable changed in the house. When they visit they always seem to pick up around 400MB on there speed testing device they bring, this is obviously tested wired, not wireless.

Wired internet is no use to me, so I need to use WI-FI. I always do a speed test with only 1 device connected to the internet (I pause the others on Virgin Connect). I also repeat this test with other devices such as laptops and phones. All speed tests are performed next to the router so signal strength can't be a problem.

Any ideas I can try? Virgin have turned off 2.4ghz bandwidth so only 5ghz in used, but it hasn't helped.

There's nothing there to explain the speed restriction. Downstream levels are pushing the upper limit but that is unlikely to be the problem.

Can you try a test?  Go into the Hub WiFi settings and turn off the 2.4GHz band. This will make sure you're using the 5GHz band with the greatest bandwidth.

HI JP,

Thanks for looking into it for me.

I did try doing that as a live tech advised me. He turned off the 2.4ghz for me to try and it went from around 100MB to 200MB, so still not fully resolved.

I also try speed tests directly next to the router, so I don't think signal is much of a problem - I only live in a small house.

Just done another speed test - 44.02MB Download / 38.52 Upload - . Trying to watch a movie but constant buffering.

Try it again, make sure the 2.4Ghz is off,  5GHz bandwidth is set to 80MHz.

Measure the speed with all other devices off.

Hi @AStott,

Welcome to our Community Forums! Thank you for your first post, and I'm sorry to hear that you're unhappy with your services and are experiencing some speed issues! We understand that this is not ideal, and not the speeds you should be receiving.

I was able to locate your account details via this Forum, and after running some checks, I can see that at the moment, you are getting some out of spec downstream power levels. As we cannot resolve this issue remotely, we will need to arrange for a technician to visit.

In order to arrange this, I will send you a Private Message. Please keep an eye out for a purple envelope at the top right corner of your Forum page. I will be in touch soon.

Thank you.

Hi JP,

I had a technician that visited yesterday, he done the same as you recommended.

We seem to be getting better speeds now using 5GHZ where possible, we get around 300MB. The tech said this is normal and we would never get anywhere near 1gig on WI-FI. What do you think?

I haven't checked if it's set to 80MHz, would you still like me to try this?

He's not wrong. Wifi speeds will never equal the hard wired speed of your connection. Have you connected via ethernet cable to the Hub4 ports and tested the connection? Don't think 5ghz is necessarily going to give you the best WiFi connection, 5ghz is best when close to the router but 2.4ghz has better coverage.
