So I was lucky enough to get the 1Gb broadband upgrade via the Volt promotion (after a lot of wrangling with the Virgin chat team!).
I'm getting speeds of around 50-52Mb upload, which is great, but only 900-940Mbps download (which I understand is incredibly fast, but not the advertised average and promised download speed of 1,130Mpbs).
I am running the speed test DIRECTLY from the router's own built-in app (Netgear Nighthawk XR500), which is connected via Ethernet to the underwhelming (for WiFi coverage) Virgin router in modem mode.
Is this speed about right, or should I be getting closer to the 1,130Mbps advertised (ie. about 100Mb faster)?

You're using modem mode. There's a gigabit link between your router and the hub and that's the bottleneck.
If your router has dual WAN capability you may use that to increase performance.
Believe the promised speed on Gig1 is 570 Mb, 1130 average, not guaranteed.

So, if I connected ethernet directly to the Virgin hub (in router mode) instead of the Netgear router, would I get faster speeds? I'm certainly not worried about the extra 100Mb but I like to know the technical reasons for things! The router is not Dual WAN capable. I use it for the better WiFi coverage, although most devices are connected with Ethernet FWIW I'm using Cat8 ethernet cables throughout.
Yes, the guaranteed speed is indeed 570Mb, which I'm surpassing, but all the advertising says 1130Mb average. When I was on the 500Mb line I was hitting 550Mb, so really just wanted to check I was getting the best I could with the 1Gb line!

For a single device you are never going to get over 940mb due to the fact the hub4 uses 1 gig ports.
Yes it is possible to bond two 1gig lines but its not easy and most routers dont have the correct protocol to get it to work.
Virgin '1130Mb average' comes into play if for example you were maxing out two of the 1gig ports (on different devices)
Or one on ethernet and one on WIFI simultaneously.
They are not fibbing when they say 1130Mb average but it's not exactly the whole truth either.

Got it, thanks!
