email account hacked

A few months back I received a blackmail threat from someone that had accessed my ntlworld email account. I was told to send £500 in Bitcoin to some encrypted ? account. Obviously I refused and received more threats as the days went on. I finally upgraded my security and found out that my ntlworld account details had been posted onto the darkweb since 2016.

This was scary. I started receiving requests to review my linkedin and facebook accounts as somone had attempted to change the passwords. I haven't been on either of those two sites in quite some time , 8 or 9 years, so wasn't too bothered but I started to receive repeated requests from linkedin, up to 20 emails a day. 

I finally realised that someone in New Jersey, USA, typing in Spanish ( true or a red herring?) had got access to my details and was using them to obtain goods and services in the USA.

Will I need to move all correspondence via my ntlworld account, then close it, to be finally safe and secure?

Many apologies for the email issues, if you are still able to access the email then it may be beneficial to move any sensitive details to a secure email.

My Linkedin account was also hacked in the past so I changed passwords and email address, no longer using my virgin ntlworld.com email, but changed to another email.

However, they must have also hacked my mobile phone number and yesterday were using my mobile phone number to try to reset the Linkedin password, or testing to see if If I had switched on the Linkedin two factor authentication (2FA) which I had. Not sure what was going on, but to be on the safe side I have updated my Linkedin password which is wise if you think a hacker has been trying to access the Linkedin account.

The reason hackers try to access Linkedin is that  they can retrieve lots of your data, and I have similar attacks on facebook also, so always switch on the 2FA, update passwords and if an email is hacked, check this on the have I been pwned website, consider using a different email then for social media.

Following the hacking of my Linkedin account and password, I received blackmail emails and still get spoofed emails pretending to be from my own contacts, but they go to my virgin email which I no loner use now.

It is quite common also to find that an email or mobile number  been used to order goods/services by someone else and the email has not been verified, I had that often and it can be other countries and I had to contact some of the companies but not easy to sort, I have had medical equipment, taxies, mobile phone purchase, tools, hotel bookings etc. Some companies accept emails or mobile numbers  with no verification done, especially in USA, Australia and the UK so invoices can then go to the wrong email address or mobile, which may be a mistake or a recycled email/phone number or  they have  deliberately used your contact  data (where someone has given false identity details for fraud activity)

I rarely used linkedin to be honest but once I started to receive email requests to 'fix' my password details I decided to attempt to contact linkedin to express my concerns. Crazy thing is that I was unable to even inform linkedin of my problem, that's when I noticed the person signing in was apparently from New Jersey but the United States of America was typed in Spanish.

I started receiving password 'fix' requests about 25 times a day. I finally blocked any dodgy senders.

Same thing with Facebook, which I used once about 12 years ago. Password 'fix' requests appeared thck and fast until I again blocked the sender at source.  The odd thing with both linkedin and Facebook was that they requested I show proof of ID. drivers licence,passport etc etc. That's when I realised that it was a scam.

Still receiving the odd 'bank' alert but like everything else I just ignore. Attempted to request a change of email account on VM but apparently that is another trial I just can't be bothered going through. Intend to move all remaining correspondence from my affected email account and just keep it for info from VM as as its my main admin account, and it can't be moved onto my virginmedia account, I am scuppered.

Facebook now does require ID, it happened to me when I was locked out of Facebook in 2020 and it may have been hacked.

A lot of the scam emails are coming from France and Germany.

I use email filters to discard some of them, It may be a BOT sending the spam, as many do seem to repeat every few weeks and many seem to be from gmail, outlook, yahoo, hotmail so I just discard them.

Even just reading  a scam email can alert the spammer that your email address is active and emails are being read, so they send more.

I also get the same scams via text to my mobile and VM landline phone, so the scammers must have mobile numbers as well and get unusual activity regarding Amazon, Linkedin, Banking, taxi bookings etc.

I also no longer use my VM email. Following the data breach of Linkedin In 2016 and 2021, I started getting the scam emails and they also have my contacts as well so some emails are from my contacts in Linkedin but are spoofed. I have had it for 7 years since the original Linkedin data breach in 2016 when they also had my password to Linkedin. I am still with Facebook and Linkedin but now use the 2FA-two factor authentication with a verify code sent to a mobile to log in, this helps to protect the login from hackers who may have the password.

I also do not save any passwords in my browser settings.

There have been many data breaches and personal data is posted online which hackers use.

I now use gmail.com and outlook.com free emails which have 2FA so are more secure.

If an account is compromised, attempt to recover the account and change the password and security options, in some cases it can be difficult, but use the help options.

At 11:29 this morning I was asked by Etsy to reset my password. I do not have an account with Etsy.
At 11:31 I was informed Your Etsy password has been changed.
At 11:32 I received the following email:
