Help - new to Virgin media and setting web safe for appropriate child settings to avoid porn and nudity but in search on phone and iPad you can still see images! Not what we wanted.  Does anyone know if there is a fix as we shall be leaving to go back to Vodafone!

Hi, I don't have Google Play, it's for Android I think? and I don't use Windows, so no - not done either

Hi

pinkrobin,

The above one is via the google search which you can get via your search engine you don't need Google play for that.

Regards

Paul.

Thanks, I don't have Google Play.  They have ipads and I have an iPhone and MacBook - we use Chrome and don't use Windows

  1. Open Terminal.
  2. Enter the command ping forcesafesearch.google.com and note the IP address. The IP address will look something like: 216.239.38.120.
  3. Enter the command sudo nano /private/etc/hosts.
  4. Create an entry at the end of hosts file with the IP address you obtained. For example: 216.239.38.120 www.google.com #forcesafesearch.
    • Important: Copy this line for any other Google country domains your users may use, like www.google.co.uk.
  5. Save the hosts file.

To confirm SafeSearch is on, go to google.com and check that SafeSearch is on by default and can't be turned off.

I consider myself pretty competent with IT and can google how to find Terminal / add the ping command, but your average person - me included actually - is unlikely to want to add code they don't really understand because a stranger told them to on a forum!!

It's obvious that Virgin hasn't really thought through their Websafe product.  Being able to search the word Porn and see gifs and images isn't websafe for kids in the slightest and I don't want to (but am obviously going to have to) check every device constantly to make sure they didn't toggle the ON back OFF again.

Thanks to those who commented.

Thanks for taking the time to comment with your websafe issues @pinkrobin.

I have looked into your web safe settings and have now ticked the box to add a nudity filter onto your connection.

Please can you check if this has changed anything with your connection and ability to search.

Web Safe does not enforce use of a search engine's Safe Search site.

Host file method would require entry for every search engine used.

Consider using a DNS that provides redirection to a search engine's Safe Search site, for example Cloudflare, OpenDNS, … Ideally you would set the DNS on the router but as Virgin Media's Hub does not support this feature DNS would need to be set on each device ― do make sure to read the terms and conditions, and privacy policy of the DNS provider.

No it's not worked.  I can still search "porn" and get a heap of sites, images and gifs in the results.

Thanks for coming back to us @pinkrobin, we have applied all of the filters that we can do

As we can only block web sites from being loaded with our web safe product and not be able stop search engines from searching as 用心棒 advised

Would you be able to follow the information from @用心棒?

Sky managed, I don't understand why Virgin can't.
