Malware letter from Virgin

Dear All,

I keep receiving letter and e-mails from virgin:

"On 28 December 2018gamut, a piece of malware, was detected on a device using your internet connection"

I scan all my devices and no malware were detected at all. if virgin media cannot identify which device or ip address there is reason of sending letter?

Any idea

Re: Malware letter from Virgin

Virgin were likely informed by a third party partner of an IP address which has been detected sending spam matching the pattern of Gamut (as Gamut is a trojan which utilises a system to send thousands of spam emails), Virgin have then checked who has that IP address and sent you correspondance relating to it.

The third party will only have been able to see the IP address that it was sent from, which will be your external IP address, not the internal IP address of the actual device that sent it as those don't leave the LAN.

Re: Malware letter from Virgin

The malware's target platform is Windows (AFAICS) and if scans of those devices have failed to locate the malware then:

  • check your malware scanner is up to date as a new variant was found mid-December
  • consider whether new / guest devices may have been responsible
  • consider contacting your malware scanner provider for further help
