Tried to call VM re intermittent wifi I've been having. Got a text saying it was from VM asking for lots of security details and also asked for my telephone password (I don't have one). Anyhow, slightly suspicious of handing over all my details - can anyone confirm if this is a genuine VM number?

As others have pointed out it may be legitimate, but you still need to be cautious as incoming call numbers can easily be spoofed.
All VM customers should have an account verification passphrase attached to their account. This is different to the account password and is sometimes referred to by staff as a telephone password. You will only be asked for three characters from it.
If you didn't initiate the text support exchange then treat it as suspicious.
