installation fee question

I could see installation option without paying installation fee, but
during making the order this option was mandatory.

May I know what is needed for installation if I'd like to do it on my
own, or is engineer required for cable installation?

And why was this option no longer available during the signup process?

Re: installation fee question

you cannot do any of the installation yourself.
it requires a virgin engineer to do the work.

Re: installation fee question

I did installation on my own with bt and sky.

No magic required to connect 3 cables 🙂

What is different here?

Re: installation fee question

There are certain rules that are in place for self install to ensure it goes right as much possible.

For instance this will include a check as to how long ago the property last had services, as if it's been too long the Virgin cables may have been damaged.

If Virgin require you to have an engineer install, it shouldn't cost any more than a self install would. The additional fee is only charged where a customer can have a self-install based on the eligibility checks but chooses an engineer one.

difference is BT/Sky use the BT telephone line network and your house will have a landline already.
does your property have an existin Virgin cable installation? if it doesn't then you need a physical install.
if it does then you should be able to do a self-install but only if that option shows as being available during the ordering process.

Virgin equipment, including the cables coming into your house are their property. As repairs are free it is their responsibility to make sure everything works correctly when installed. They should also check signal levels & make any adjustments required in the street cabinet.

Re: installation fee question

I 'cannot' as:
- I am not allowed because of....what? there is nothing lethal to be worried about 😉
- I cannot because I don't have tools? like what?
- why?

Re: installation fee question

I have just received a phone call and email:

"Following our conversation, our permit to carry out the ground works is on the 21st of June.

Our contract partners requires 5 days for the works to be completed.

We can proceed with the installation on the 28th of June if you wish to proceed with the order.

Should you have any question or clarifications, please do not hesitate to reply to this email and I will gladly assist you at my best."

I was just waiting for this....simple task, yet they managed to f* it up.

They had almost 2 weeks between the order date and installation date.

Someone has mentioned here that the one-off installation fee is:

"For instance this will include a check as to how long ago the property last had services, as if it's been too long the Virgin cables may have been damaged"

Which they haven't checked priori to the installation! So this is basically a rip-off. Basically what it means is:

- we will add £50 to your bill, but we own't check the cables before the installation

- if during the installation it turns out cables are damaged, we will fix them, but this will postpone whole installation by days/weeks/month?

- we will tell the customer they should be happy because...c'mon we eventually fixed the cables HA! But if the cables were not damaged we would have saved £50 in our pockets!

long story short: cancellation requested
