When should I cancel existing broadband service?

I am due to have my VM broadband installed on 22 March.

Will VM contact my existing supplier (Plusnet)? Or do I need to contact them directly?

If I do need to contact them, should I set the end date as 22 March?

no they won't cancel your broadband. that's up to you to do.
you should only cancel it once your virgin install is complete and tested as working by you.

Yes, I am transferring my phone number. Currently, line rental, calls and broadband are all provided by Plusnet. Will VM manage the switchover? Perhaps I should notify Plusnet anyway?

No need to contact your existing Provider VM will do what they do to take the number over on installation day.

On my installation day BT cut my phone and broadband off before breakfast the day of VM installation.

Right.

Under OFCOM rules your landline must be active & NOT have a disconnection pending in order to port your number. So you need to contact Virgin & THEY deal with the cancellation of your landline. However, you will have to cancel the Broadband & TV parts.

Just to add to my comment on my transfer to VM from BT I did nothing.

From my order request in the first place and saying I wanted my number transferring VM did it all with no input from me, in fact I was following advice from here in the forum to overlap and not cease the the present provider just in case VM installation failed to take place, so BT would have had no idea where I was going untill they heard from VM.

On VM installation date BT sent me the final invoice.

A quick update:

VM installed my fibre and ported my telephone number across. I then phoned Plusnet and cancelled my broadband.

good luck cancelling plusnet.
they have a habit of continuing to bill people who have left resulting in debt letters being sent!
keep a very close eye on what they do (even after you've fully cancelled).
