Hi - new here so hoping to get some clarity around an install which is booked for later in the month.
I'm having all services installed including a 2nd V6 box to go upstairs in the back bedroom. The first box is a piece of cake as it's front of house in a bay window pretty much next to the street so straightforward I think.
The problem is that I live in a mid terrace and my issue is that I do not want cables running through the house to the 2nd box - I'm not sure but does the 2nd box need to be connected to both the internet connection and the coax connection??? If it's just internet then I could solve this easily with powerlines???
On the basis that I do need both internet and coax connections to the second box, what are peoples experiences with getting VM to install the cable over the roof - where Sky put the current one? Our loft is fully converted into a bedroom with 2 velux to front and dormer to rear so maybe an option with dropping cable out of one velux to front and throwing rest to the rear somehow?
Lastly, if the engineer is likely to say no to doing the cable over roof himself - what are the experiences with pre-positioning the required cable for the install myself, over the roof and hanging waiting for the engineer? Is the cable required available or would I have to check with a pre-installation survey and maybe get them to give me the cable?
Many thanks in advance for any help - I'm a total novice at these things, it isn't my area at all.
The bad news is Virgin do not use IPTV like BT or TalkTalk, they use a broadcast spectrum like Freeview, so a coaxial connection is mandatory to all Virgin equipment (ie. The V6 requires both coax & a connection to the hub).
You are correct in that Virgin will not install over a roof, & that they also use specialised cable made for their own use.
The forum team here may be able to arrange something, but it will take them several days to reply.
Cable customer since 1993. Services: FH TV, Sky Sports & Movies (2xV6), Talk Anytime Phone, VIVID 350, Virgin PAYG Mobile
Thanks for that - confirmed my worst pretty much! I might have to can it and stick with Sky or go to BTTV as, after the salesman who said it'll be no problem, it's now all sounding a bit like hard work unless I want a new indoor washing line
Just to check, when you say they won't install over a roof - is that due to H&S as it involves working at height? If I can get them to supply the cable could I still perform that bit myself maybe?
Hi - I asked VM over the phone what they were going to do re the install of box 2 in back of house and they were obviously non-committal on what would be done so I asked for a pre-instal visit to survey what could be done. The chap who visited confirmed that it was too high to deal with for any installer as I was asking for the cable to be routed outside of the (terraced) house but, ultimately, he left me with enough cable as I said I would get the cable where I wanted it to be (over the roof). Luckily this wasn't so bad for us as we have a converted loft. Otherwise the only other option for us was for the installer to go through the house which is not really desirable.
