Does the router need to be next to the modem?

No, and the typical Ethernet cable is more than adequate for dealing with a distance of several metres.

Errrr... what equipment to you have? A VM Hub is a one-piece device containing your modem and the router - they are thus together.

Or have you got your own router? If so then its the distance of the length of the ethernet cable you are using.

Or do you mean the Hub near the wall socket? Or a TV box ?

I do not work for VM. My services: HD TV on VIP (+ Sky Sports & Movies & BT sport), x3 V6 boxes (1 wired, 2 on WiFi) Hub5 in modem mode with Apple Airport Extreme Router +2 Airport Express's & TP-Link Archer C64 WAP. On Volt 350Mbps, Talk Anytime Phone, x2 Mobile SIM only iPhones.
