Hub 4 Modem Mode Questions Please

Slimbob
Tuning in

Hi,

Please can I ask 2 quick few questions regarding putting my Hub 4 into modem mode.

1 – Will it disable the 2 telephone ports on the Hub 4?

2 – Will it disable the security features of the Hub 4 ?

Thank you very much for your help.

Bob.

1) VM only use TEL 1 port for Hub hosted phones, this works in both Router and Modem mode.

2) In Modem mode the 3rd party Router that you supply provides the Firewall + NAT functionality ensuring a proper level of security for your devices.

Hi Client62

Thank you so much for getting back to me I really do appreciate it.

May I ask you one more thing.

I only have one device (Desk top P.C) which is connected via ethernet cable (wired connection) to the Hub 4, I have no other devices and no need for Wifi at all in my house.

I have my reasons for asking this and I know it does seem a bit strange but could I switch my Hub 4 into modem mode and connect my P.C to it and access the internet directly through my Hub 4 modem with no extra 3rd party router?

Is it still technically safe to do this, I do use my windows defender security software and make sure to keep it updated.

Thanks so much again Client62.

Bob.

Yes you can do this I for one did it years ago and use ICS but I don't trust windows firewall to do the right thing and so my network has bridge firewalls.

If you do this you want to check with GRC.com for a port scan you should also check inbound firewall settings mostly all thats needed is DHCP

I'd define the Modem mode network as being a "Public Network" in the Windows firewall
to avoid exposing file or printer shares.

A visit to website like GRC ShieldsUp may help to understand if other ports are exposed.

Thanks very much for the feedback Legacy1
