Fibre installation issue

Hello! I had Virgin TV/Fibre broadband installed last week but unfortunately I’m not happy with the set up as it’s left a mass of wires and boxes in the corner of our dining room and the hub isn’t in the best position.

I’ve marked the internal Virgin boxes A and B in the picture. I think box A is the ONU? I’d like to move box B and the hub so they are nearer the TV and in the centre of the house which would give a better Wi-Fi signal throughout the house and I could then hide the coax cables in a cupboard.

There is currently 1 fibre optic cable which runs box A to box B so all I want to do is replace that cable (currently 3m long wound up in Box B) and replace with a 7 metre cable which I can run below the floor.

I really don’t mind doing it myself as I’ve got all the necessary tools. All I’d need is the 7m internal fibre optic cable. Can I just buy one of these from Amazon and do this job myself or do I have to get a Virgin engineer round? They never seem willing to do ‘fiddly’ jobs and just want to surface mount wires as it makes the job quicker!

Thanks

You will have to wait for a VM forum team reply to find out if they can send you a longer fibre cable.

This video advises 2m to 40 m lengths are available (though not sure how 'official' the video is)

Alternative option, if feasible, might be to fit some conduit under the floor with a pull rope then get a VM tech in to do the fitting, provide the fibre and pull the new fibre connection through the conduit. Conduit would have to be a suitable diameter to accommodate whatever size the fibre connector is.

Thanks for the reply!

It’s one of those jobs that should take no more than half an hour but in an effort to do as little damage to the floorboards as possible, it could end up taking a few hours. I understand the technicians have time constraints which is why I’m happy to do it at my own pace. All I’m essentially doing is unplugging a 3m fibre optic cable and plugging in a a 7m one, and as a tradesman with over 10 years experience I’m more than capable of running the cable myself and have all the necessary tools.

Hopefully Virgin will agree to send me a new cable as the current set up is not satisfactory.

Any chance a member of VM can actually respond to this query?

It can take several days for the VM forum team to reply. Bumping your topic might actually produce the opposite of the desired outcome.

Hi @richardbell81

I can see you have had a reply from @Sabrina_B, she will be the best bet to further assist you with this, she would not have replied as they were her rest days. 😊,

Thanks,
