Can the fibre optic cable from the wall socket to the ONU be replaced with a longer one

Can the fibre optic cable from the wall socket to the ONU be replaced with a longer one? What's the maximum length of the cables that VM provides. The ONU is sitting right next to the wall socket at the moment but I'm thinking of moving it to be new the router.

Hi nrodrigo,

Thank you for your reply.

Unfortunately we cannot recommend buying a cable as this can impact the service you receive.

If you wish for us to arrange a visit to complete a relocation/rewire, please do let us know and we can book this in.

Thanks,

Nat

Typically the OMNI box containing the ONU stays put and coax cables are run to where ever you would prefer the Hub and / or TV equipment to be located in and around the home.

I believe that VM only charge £25 for an engineer to come out and to perform customer requested re-routing of service cables.

Hi Nrodrigo,

Thanks for using the forums to get this question about your ONU/Coax cable looked into, I can see you've already been given some helpful information by @Client62 and they are correct ✔

We can book an engineer to come round to take a look into what you're requesting, they will have all the equipment in their van for internal wiring/relocating of equipment. This has a small call-out charge of £25 so please let me know if you'd like to go ahead with this and we can get it booked in 🙂

Thanks,

Thanks both. I would like to know the length of the longest white Fibre Optic cable that VM use inside the house (from the wall socket to the ONU). According to VN engineers, it's only 15m. The reason I want a longer cable is to move the ONU from it's current location to be in the living room, closer to the router, as the room currently it's sitting is not convenient. I don't want to relocate the wall socket to the living room either as it's not a easy job. There are 30m cables available on Amazon and wondering whether this will be of the same specs as the VM ones.

Can I also use another 15m cable with a coupler to extend the length of the current one?

All the ideas will be helpful

Hi @nrodrigo

You can't do the job yourself. Only authorised VM personnel.

VM use specialised cable, they also need to rebalance and possibly adjust the signal levels to ensure your service is optimal.

If you did any alterations yourself you could seriously impact the services of other customers. If that happened you may also be liable for any costs that where needed for VM to fix the issues caused by the job.

VM don't use fibre inside the property. Everything is converted to specialised triple screened coaxial cable. This is designed to stop ingress from broadcast TV, Radio & Mobile phone signals, which could cause serious issues with your installation.

Thanks all for your valuable advice and taking time to answer my questions. I've booked an engineer to come and do the change now. Tbh, VM customer service needs to be a bit more organised. They are giving wrong information and seems like keep logging our calls on 100 different platforms. Every time you chat or speak to someone, you have to start from the beginning but the speed of VM broadband, I'm still with them.

It sounds like you have a very new install with a fibre outlet inside your house. The cable you need is a single-mode LC/APC simplex cable, it should have green plugs.

It is against the T&C's of the Contract to alter any VM cables inside or outside the property.  If any interference is caused by users DIY, it will affect every user on the segment.  You may also be liable for any costs to fix the problems.

Best to pay the nominal £25 fee for a technician to do all the work.  It's not a bad price, considering it used to be £99.
