Cable hanging loose across 3 stories on front of property

Hello,

I have Virgin Media service in my flat, which is at the top of a three-story building. The cable supplying the service enteres at the front corner of the building, and the run from gorund level had been clipped neatly to the nearest sidewall. However, in a storm in December, it below loose and has been flapping wildly across the front of the property since then. Virgin have not come out to fix it, depsite repeated calls from me and assurances they would do so. The other flat owners in the building are quite rightly running out of patience and complaining about it. Bottom line: I need to get this sorted, or I will need to cancel the service and have the cabling removed. Any help from the Virgin moderators here would be appreciated--I otherwise like the service. NB--the building is pretty tall, so you may need something more than a ladder.

Thank you in advance for your help!

just so you know, even if you cancel the cable won't be removed.

Re: Cable hanging loose across 3 stories on front of property

Thank you Chenks! I’m aware. I would remove it myself as it’s a clear safety hazard and cannot remain as is. It will quite probably pull itself loose in another good storm. As noted, I would rather keep the service. However, I shouldn’t have to pursue Virgin for three months to get something like this fixed.

don't remove it yourself, you may end up with a large bill to repair any damage to the entire local network you might cause in doing it.

Re: Cable hanging loose across 3 stories on front of property

Many of these installations took place in the early 1990s when working at heights rules weren’t so stringent.

The number of cable companies reduced from around 20 (through them going bust or merging) so there is only one on mainland UK, Virgin Media. With this the number of teams able to handle heights issues diminished to a point where anyone wanting a service in your type of situation is now automatically declared unserviceable unless the building is wired internally.

VM do have heights teams now, but they are very few & as a result very busy. Unless VM get specialist contractors in nothing is likely to get done. What is certain is if the cables are removed then everyone above the first floor becomes unserviceable.

Re: Cable hanging loose across 3 stories on front of property

Hello cxt5000

Welcome to our community forums and thank you for your post.

We are sorry to hear of any issues regarding the cable supplying your services. We'd like to help you on here with this as much as possible.

Do you have a photograph of the cable at all that you would be able to post on here so that we can take a closer look please?

We look forward to hearing back from you soon.

Many thanks.

This was installed by Virgin in 2014. I had it installed.

Re: Cable hanging loose across 3 stories on front of property

Well, they may end with a larger bill if fines from the owners association commence or any damage to the property is caused. No other flats feed off this cable. As I said, it may simply detach itself the way it’s whipping around in the wind. What I don’t understand is how an operation the size and scale of Virgin Media isn’t staffed to maintain its own cables.

Not at the moment, but can get you one. For obvious reasons, though, would prefer to pm it.

Thanks for your help!
