Broadband drops in hot weather

Hi everyone

only had virgin broadband about a month and have a big problem of it not working for 5 or 6 hours in the day. It seems to be when it’s hot outside. Always at a similar time about 11.30 am and comes back 6pm. There is a join in cable where engineer connected to a cable in garden which is above ground and has black insulation tape around it. I’ve put objects over this to keep it in shade but still have problems. My wife works for NHS and does a lot from home at the moment so this is not an ideal situation. Spent a long time on phone explaining the problem only to be told the earliest an engineer can come out is Aug 13th. Four weeks wait is ridiculous and makes me wish I had stayed with talktalk.
Anyone got any idea about anything I could try to get this solved

thanks Kev

Downstream levels/SNR seems ok, although the Post RS activity looks a bit busy.

Can’t see any Upstream data. There should be 4 channels at 64 QAM with power levels not exceeding 50dB. Also any regular T3/T4 error activity needs investigation.

More than likely expansion of the cable is putting signal levels out of spec. A lot of companies are now having issues due to staff being advised to self-isolate, so this may be the problem with the long lead time. Either that or a third party will be replacing your drop line.

Most likely is that your signal levels are marginal. Heat on the street side cabinet and cables causes the levels to drop and can cause disconnects.

If you post you hub stats (downstream and upstream levels) when its working early morning and again mid afternoon when it isn't (you can still connect to the hub even if your internet is not working)

Do you have any attenuator connected to the back of the hub?

Was this a self install or engineer attended one?

Hi

it was installed by an engineer. Like I say outside the house it is joined to an existing cable that had been cut previously by looks of it. It has been covered by black insulation tape. I’ve covered all this so it’s in shade but still have problems.

So if hot weather is causing problems what is the solution. What can the engineer do to solve this. Seems ludicrous that every time we get nice weather I’m left without broadband

On the downstream side my signals are about +3dB in the cold.
They are at -0.5dB.

Upstream they go from 44dB up to 48dB now.

If you post your signal levels from the hub we can determine if this is likely the cause.

Regarding the joint in the cable , do you know if this has been undertaken with standard F type connectors?

HiNot sure what connector the engineer used. I have a white cable from house joining a black cable in garden with lots of black insulation tape round it. How do I check my router for its stats

Access the router with you web browser on 192.168.0.1 (assuming you are in router mode).

If you have logged in before and set a password then don't log in but click the link at the bottom of the page (Check Router Status)

Then copy and paste the information from the Downstream and Upstream tabs here

A tech will check all the connections replace if necessary & if the signal is still out of tolerance will make an adjustment to the levels in the street cabinet.
