using data but connected to wifi??

Hello everyone, I could really use some help as I'm a bit of a technophobe!

My daughter is managing to use up her data allowances every month. She is also hitting her spending cap each month. I was concerned about this as it is unusual for her, so topped up the cap by an extra 3 pounds last night when she was in bed. By 9.00 this morning she had used it up but not been out of the house and was looking at the internet through wifi at home.

I don't understand how she is using data up when browsing on wifi. Could anyone clarify this for me before I go mad!! she had not sent any picture messages etc, she was literally browsing some of her apps inc whatsapp and maybe listening to a bit of music

Many thanks in advance x

Re: using data but connected to wifi??

normally ion settings data usage.

If the wifi is dropping out the mobile data will take over. If she moves out of range.

It should tell you what apps are using the data.
You might want to turn off mobile data when at home if the wifi is dropping out

Re: using data but connected to wifi??

I have a Samsung Galaxy phone and have mobile data disabled at home (Settings > Connections > Data usage > Mobile data). Your daughter should do the same. She should check her WiFi speed with speedtest.net.

Re: using data but connected to wifi??

Hiya, thanks for reply. Does it automatically revert back to data outside and back to wifi when she comes home or would you have to do it manually each time? I will have a look

Re: using data but connected to wifi??

When Mobile data is disabled it can only be manually enabled. This is exactly what I want as a WiFi failure becomes noticeable.
