WiFi extension

Hi we have recently joined Virgin and have a secondV6 box in our garden room. We also ran a cat6 Ethernet cable out to our garden room when it was built. We now want to get WiFi out there as the signal from the hub in the house doesn’t reach down the garden. Can anyone tell me how I do this?

Re: WiFi extension

you could attach a wireless access point to the end of Cat6 cable, there is so many different makes/model of access points depends on budget.. a lot of the community recommend using ubiquiti hardware, could get something like https://www.amazon.co.uk/TP-LINK-Archer-C50-V3-AC1200/dp/B075PDLQ2Y/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?s=computers&ie=U... this is a router but have option for access point.

Would an old sky router work?

Re: WiFi extension

Looks like it would on this sky forum post by ticking some individual settings as doesn’t look like it has a simple “access point mode”

the post does describe it but you’ll need a laptop connected directly to the Sky router to set it up.  Once done then connect sky router to the wired lan point in the room.  You’ll need to decide whether to use a separate WiFi network name so that you can choose to connect to that from your phones and tablets, or whether to use the same WiFi network name and hope you get good seamless roaming between the two

Re: WiFi extension

We didn’t have Sky Q so not sure if our old router would be suitable?  we also have an old Netgear Rangemax next router that has been given to us.

Other forums suggest that Adsl routers don’t Work with virgin ?

Re: WiFi extension

adsl routers are designed to work with e.g. BT/talktalk,Sky broadband since virginmedia works via cable totally different network.. looking briefly at the Netgear Rangemax next that is a wireless access point so should work fine.

Re: WiFi extension

Think setup to change it to an access point would be roughly the same on any recentish Sky router

The Netgear should have a specific access point mode link here

Dont worry about the adsl / virgin thing  the VM hub is doing the virgin connection and your overall home network. You’re using another “router” not as a router but as an access point onto the VM Hub network thanks to the cat6 cabling you put in
