WiFi dropping out every few hours

Hello,

We’ve been with virgin since moving in a year ago with very few issues (except weak signal as house is quite large but Powerline extenders help that a lot). We have a Superhub 3

For the past week or so all of our devices disconnect from the internet every few hours until we reboot the router. This is very impractical not just because it is annoying, but my husband works from home and needs constant wired connection to the router and internet for a few devices. So these can lose some information every time we have to restart the router.

But most of all we use our Amazon Fire to constantly watch Peppa Pig to keep our two toddlers entertained! It’s vital!

Any tips?

Thanks.

Re: WiFi dropping out every few hours

Missing information.... when these wifi dropouts occur, do your husband's device(s) on the ethernet cables also drop off the internet at the same time? - or do they remain connected until you reboot the Hub for the wifi ones ?

Re: WiFi dropping out every few hours

If he’s connected via Ethernet to the router he can still access the internet on his Macbook when the WiFi drops out around the house so I’d imagine the other devices plugged in directly are still able to access the internet.

Re: WiFi dropping out every few hours

Sorry, i realise I should have clarified in the original post that he is still able to connect to the internet via Ethernet from his laptop, it is just WiFi connections that are dropping.

Re: WiFi dropping out every few hours

OK - so its just a wifi issue. You say you only started recently. Did it coincide with the VM implementation of "intelligent wifi" on the Hub3 - around March 12th it was launched?

Re: WiFi dropping out every few hours

I would say we’ve been having problems for about three weeks. I can’t remember having any major issues before then so unsure whether you think it would still be related to the Intelligent WiFi given the time frame. But certainly since last June until Mid-April we have very rarely had to restart the router, and now we have to do it about 5 times a day so I’m sure something must have changed.

Thanks

Re: WiFi dropping out every few hours

There are a few suggestions on this forum in the many threads relating to this issue on how to circumvent these problems - including disabling smart wifi, renaming the 2 wireless networks etc.
However IMHO, I think the best long term solution is to take control of your own wireless environment and put the Hub into modem mode and connect up your own gigabit wireless router or a router + wireless access point.
Its what I did many years ago and have never had a VM related wifi only issue.

Re: WiFi dropping out every few hours

We’re happy to do that, are you able to recommend any good equipment? Ideally not hugely expensive but that will stand the test of time. Thank you for your advice.

Re: WiFi dropping out every few hours

Bit like asking to "recommend me a car" :-)
Depends on things like how many devices do you want to connect? What additional features would you like (client device timed access?, bandwidth share allocation? etc). And of course your budget. £60-100 will get you a very capable router, £150 would be around the sweet spot I would say. Just make sure it has gigabit ports and is a "cable" router. If your needs are fairly "normal" ,below are some recent threads from folks on here who have been happy with their purchases. Have a look around them and also also see these for more "top of the range" & mesh systems

Re: WiFi dropping out every few hours

How have you got the powerline adapters configured?
Are they using the same SSID as the Hub?
If so I would give them separate so you know what devices are connected to the Hub and the powerline adapters.

The Powerline Adapters have their own Wireless Access Points, completely independent to the Hub's WiFi, so if devices connected to the Hub 3 and the powerline adapters are loosing connection at the same time, then it will not be a Hub 3 problem, and a 3rd party router will probably not resolve your issues.

As a sanity check, it would be worth posting some basic diagnostic info.

Navigate to the hub's GUI using http://192.168.0.1
Don't log in, click the Router Status button
Copy \ Paste the Downstream, Upstream, and Network Logs.

Don't worry about the formatting, but do obscure personal information like your WAN IP address.

Wireless is heavily dependent on a potentially dynamic unique wireless environment, so a third party router is not guaranteed to resolve your issues, despite what ill-informed opinion says. The router will have to overcome the same hurdles as the Hub, how well it does depends on the wireless environment and quality of the router. Bear in mind the router is only one (important) part of the equation, of which there are many parts, like router\client positioning, range, interference etc. etc.
