Wi-Fi cutting in and out

Musikatrine
Tuning in

Our internet has become increasingly unstable over the last couple of months. Sometimes it drops out for just a few seconds and other times it’s out for longer. The service status says everything is ok and  restarting and resetting doesn’t help. Sometimes, when we run a test, it does say that there is an issue but not what or what to do about it. The household works from home and it’s very disruptive. What can we do?

Are wired connections OK?

Look at using wired (Ethernet) connections for work/important stuff anyway.

If wired also plays up post your broadband stats (off hub management pages).

If wired is ok do some WiFi troubleshooting - analyser app, change channels and so on.

Neighbour on same channels? 5GHZ and 2.4GHz affected?

Go from there.

I know a bit about Wi-Fi, Telecoms, and TV as I used to do it for a living but I'm not perfect so don't beat me up... If you make things you make mistakes!

Unfortunately changing the channels didn’t help, it still drops intermittently. Is there any advice on which frequency and/or channel tends to be more reliable?

Whichever channels are clearest/least occupied in your location

Keep to 1,6 or 11 on 2.4GHz to avoid overlap.

There can be various reasons for problems with WiFi.

Getting your own wireless router (a more renowned one) is likely to be worthwhile in the long term. They have more expensive chipsets, improved design, better/more antennas,  better software, later technology, fewer bugs and so on.

Unfortunately changing channels etc has not helped, and the issue is also on the cabled connection. It has been increasingly bad over the last month or so, so maybe Storm Anwen has caused an issue somewhere we can’t see. I think we need a technician out to do thorough checks.

Post the Network, Upstream and Downstream logs from the hubs admin pages back here as text so we can check them over
