My wifi has been intermittent the last few days
I managed to find a telephone number for Virgin media (which is not on the VM app btw)
I called up and after a few automated questions I was advised that my post code is having problems and changes are being made today , and should be fixed by 6pm
I have had work zoom meetings most of the day and 3 times my Wi-Fi has crashed.
Why wasn’t I informed of these changes to save embarrassing moments with work!!

Depends on the reason for the outage. If it's planned work VM often do notify in advance. I had such a warning recently when changes were due.
But if it's to fix faults or unexpected 'problems' as in your case, there will be no opportunity to decide who is affected and notify them. That will just delay the work.
Remember that this is a residential service with no guarantee of continuous connection. Many people working from home arrange backup services.
