Use VM Router as Modem Mode and Connect EE Smart Hub

Hi, I need a bit of a hand.

Im trying to connect my VM router 3 as a modem mode, and then connect my EE smart hub as the primary source for the routing, to access wirelessly/ethernet to the internet.

I have changed the VM router to Modem Mode, and then connected my EE smart hub (latest white Router), from LAN port 1 on the VM router, to the WAN (Red) port on the EE smart Hub. (the VM Router is on Magenta colour for the Modem Mode)
However the light stays on yellow the whole time, and cant access the internet.

i have looked online, and some people say I need to change WAN settings on the EE smart hub. However on the EE smart hub admin settings, there is nothing to change WAN Settings. So Im stuck, and no idea what to do.
Is it to change the DHCP ip range, is it to setup a DNS or?

If you reply, please help with step by step, as Im not very tech savvy when it comes to networks.

Cheers

Re: Use VM Router as Modem Mode and Connect EE Smart Hub

I can’t remember off the top of my head if that EE router has a true WAN port.  Possibly, maybe not.

It’s the type enabled for Fibre modems, right?

Try changing the IP address to, say, 182.168.0.2 and see if it connects with Virgin hub in router mode.

One way or another you need DHCP connection on the WAN side if using with VM hub in modem mode.

I use a BT Smart hub as an additional AP, but it won’t work as the router with VM hub in modem mode - I use a third party router instead

No disrespect, but you probably need more skills to sort it out, if at all possible.

There should be a setting where you can choose between VDSL and FTTP.

I believe FTTP disables the built in modem and enables the WAN port.

Which exact EE hub is it?

Put a picture of the sockets

is the WAN port all red or yellow with red dot above?

This is what the router looks like, Its the latest router enabled with the FTTP connections.

Some more pictures of the actual admin pages of the EE smart hub

No idea what part of the settings I should be changing, cant find anything to do with VDSL and FTTP, and tried a different IP address, then connect to VM router. still no luck.
And cant physically edit anything on the WAN button in the ipv4 config page

Re: Use VM Router as Modem Mode and Connect EE Smart Hub

I can’t see the pictures yet, but;

  •  I recall, with the BT Smart Hub 2, which uses same basic hardware I believe, the setting for FFTP/VDSL was only on later firmware (with firmware rolled out only if hub online with valid connection)
  • The BT & EE fttp services use PPPoE authentication - Virgin don’t - so it won’t work

Looking at those screenshots, I doubt if you will get this to work.  Buy a proper cable router and save a lot of heartache.

Re: Use VM Router as Modem Mode and Connect EE Smart Hub

Yeah it was worth a shot, since i had EE before. and NGL, Virgin's signal strength is horrendous. Any advice what's the best router that will work well with VM in modem mode? and that wont break the bank
