The keeps wifi turning off

Tuning in

I have a student contract for my uni house, and the wifi is very annoying to deal with, as it turns off a lot for some devices, but continues to work on others, and vice versa. The only fix is to continuously restart the wifi, which is a pain for everyone living in the house as it means they have to stop their work for 10 minutes. What ways can this be resolved? Is it the router? should we get a new router and it will start working fine? Please help find a fix for this as it is getting on everyone's nerves.

Hi @johnnywharton0

Have you tried separating the wifi bands? The 2.4GHz band  is a stronger signal but slower than 5GHz so if you have problems on 5GHz (eg devices dropping off) it might be an idea to get the devices connecting on the 2.4GHz band

Open a browser and log into your hub 192.168.0.1 - using the SSID and wifi settings password printed on a sticker on your hub. Then navigate to the following settings so you can differentiate between the signals.

Advanced Settings > Wireless > Wireless Signal > click on Disable Channel Optimization  at the bottom then  click on Apply Changes.

Now go to Advanced Settings > Wireless > Security > Add  2G to the end of the 2.4GHz Channel name - For example if it's VM12345678 change it to VM123456782G

You can leave the passwords the same as they are.  Then at the bottom click on Apply Changes. Then log out of the hub at the top of the page.

You will need to reconnect all you Wi-Fi devices some will want to connect to 5Ghz and some to 2.4GHz and some will connect to either.

You could also do a search for an app such as wifi analyzer which tells you the strength of the channel you are connected on, and also shows other channels so you can decide if you want to change the channel number on your hub

Advanced Settings > Wireless > Wireless Signal >  beneath both the 5Ghz and  2.4GHz sections click on the manual button, and in the drop down box click on the channel number you want to change it to, then scroll down and  click on Apply Changes.

Hey, I have done this and now whenever i want to connect to the original wifi, (not the one with 2G) in my laptop, it just keeps saying “no internet” whenever i try to connect

Hi @johnnywharton0 thanks for your post here in the Community, although we're sorry to hear of the concerns you've raised here.

The problem is that the Hub does usually try to switch between the two frequencies for you, as part of it's Smart WiFi service.

Manually overriding this can affect things which is what you've experienced here.

Can you try resetting your Hub back to its factory settings as advised here and let us know how you get on after please?

Once this is done, the 2G network will no longer be visible, it'll just be your default WiFi name. The 2G and 5G networks will still be there, it's just your Hub will do the work for you in the background when it switches to and from between them!

Please keep us updated here.

Many thanks
