Packet Loss

Hello,

I have been having an ongoing issue with my broadband for quite some time now. I get good speeds (both upload and download), currently over 300 Mbps dowload and 30-35 upload. However, I have noticed that I regularly have issues with packet loss. I use my internet connection for both online gaming and streaming and this is causing massive issues.

I originally had a virgin media engineer out who spent a good few hours looking over the setup and opted to install a signal booster which did somewhat improve the connection but hasn't solved the problem. He suspected issues could be in the box in the road and told me he be back on the weekend to take a look as he was working in the area, but I never heard from him again.

I ran wireshark on my PC multiple times and it shows large packet loss. I have checked all of the connections in my flat (so did the engineer previously) and there are no loose connections, no damage or kinks to the cables. I have even replaced sections of the cable to see if it would help, but it didn't. I also use a wired connection, not wifi.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Ed

I take it by "wireshark on my PC multiple times and it shows large packet loss" you are doing a ping and not seeing the reply? should the downstream or upstream can you run this test

Check your not getting packet loss around 5Mb up or down if getting loss which is it down or up

Thanks for the reply,

I had a friend help me set it up and was searching for the following in the results.

tcp.analysis.lost_segment

tcp.analysis.retransmission

I also have been running BQM since my original post as I saw someone else using it in another thread.

VoIP - I have run multiple times and it has gone as high as 35%

Problem sorter

I would recommend splitting the bands so they’re shown as separate by adding 5G to the 5Ghz band’s SSID & 2G to the 2.4Ghz band’s SSID. Solved the problem of 100% packet loss for me.

My Broadband Ping - Virginmedia

Thank you for the suggestion, I gave this a go but it has made no difference unfortunately

Log in to the router online (192.168.0.1) & go to advanced settings>Security>Firewall & deselect all but Firewall protection.
