All I can think of is that Safari thinks it is trying to connect through a proxy that isn't there!

If Chrome works on the same laptop - it has to be a setting in Safari somewhere!

Humour me:

As I understand it -

You are booting up your Macbook
It is connected to your home wifi network
If you open Chrome Web Browser - It works fine and you can view websites
If you open Safari Web Browser on the same laptop - you can't view any websites.

What happens if you type www.google.com into the address bar in Safari?

Can you post a screenshot of any error message?

Is it only the Macbook that cannot connect?
(Does Chrome (browser?) work on the Macbook)?

Can you try forgetting and reconnecting to the network (https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-forget-a-wifi-network-on-mac?r=US&IR=T)

Have you tried using a Cat 6 cable with a USB adaptor if required.  It's always good to have a wired option in any case, especially as VM always request wired tests for troubleshooting.

Only the MacBook Pro and yes Chrome works fine

i have not tried the forget network trick as it can obviously see an use it - except with Safari

any thoughts?

No not yet.
the problem is not that the MacBook doesn’t work with the hub. It’s that Safari doesn’t work with it.

safari works fine if I connect to my portable my fi box (O2)

it must be a software incompatibility?

Sorry pressed the wrong button
there are no error messages - it just “hangs”

the blue loading bar in safari goes about a 1/10th of the way along the bar and stops

If Chrome is working then it's not a Hub or virgin media issue
