Internet drop out - SYNC Timing Synchronization failure - Loss of Sync errors..

gingamonkey
On our wavelength

My Virgin broadband has generally been pretty rock solid over the years, but the past few weeks it has got progressively worse - Losing internet intermittently (wired AND wireless devices).

I've tested that all the connections are nicely tightened, and I'm pretty confident it's the cabling to the house, as a joint had to be buried in the flower bed by Virgin a few years back when we had the drive widened. It's also partially affecting the digital TV signal as the image corrupts occasionally.

I've spoken with a customer service representative earlier this evening, but it's become much more prominent throughout today/this evening, and the earliest they have been able to book me in for is 29th December!?

This is 4 weeks away, and is not good enough when both myself and my wife rely on the internet to work from home for half the week each!

Here is an example of the logs I'm getting from the router:

Can you post up the full set of data.

Navigate to these “data pages” and just copy/paste the normal “Formatted Text” (not images) 3 FULL sets of data onto here – 2 tables from the Downstream, 2 from the Upstream, Don't worry too much about the formatting it can be easily read.

Your down power levels are all very low and could be causing the issues. RS error counts need resetting and set up a BQM as per below
__________________________________
Switch the Hub off and unplug it from the mains supply for five minutes. Whilst it's off, do a quick check that all of your coax and ethernet cable connections are in nice and "finger" tight - at the Hub and wall box and also at any connectors etc. Ensure there are no “unterminated cable loose ends. Disconnect all the connections and reconnect to be sure. Also check that the internal wiring is ok with no kinking or chaffing, check that all looks good with the outside cabling (when it gets light) and wall box (no “staples, etc.,) piercing the cables. Then switch the Hub back on and leave ~5 minutes

When all done, check back in the settings and ensure that all the RS error counts and T3 errors have all reset to 0. Then check every hour or so to see if they start reappearing - they shouldn't. If they do (particularly the PostRS and any T3 ones) you have a problem (noise) that only a Tech visit will sort.

Also see if the down power levels are still all low - the recommended range is -6dBmV to +10dBmV

__________
Also, If you haven’t already, set up a free, secure and “offlsite” - “Broadband Quality Monitor” to continually monitor the state of your connection and record any true network dropouts , latency issues, packet drops, etc - it will thus allow you to differentiate between those and simple wifi dropouts. It does it 24/7/365 and it keeps a visual record of any/all of your network disconnections, useful data to have to match to the Network logs (in your Hub settings) and also in discussions with VM - note it will take a few hours to start seeing a sensible picture - post up the “link” to the “share live graph”. Click the lower link (Share Live Graph) then, click generate. Copy the text in the Direct Link box, beware, there may be more text than you can see. On here click the Link icon (2 links chain to the left of the camera icon) In the URL box paste the link you copied and then click OK

Thanks John - I've power cycled it already, but done it again with a longer 'off' period, checking connections,etc.... still looks to be the same unfortunately.

FYI, where the cable leaves the ground, there is a Virgin splitter outside, sending a feed to the TiVO box in the lounge, and another to the router in the upstairs study - BOTH are showing dropouts.

As well as the errors being logged on the router, I am seeing increasing amounts of corruption on the TiVO box visuals too, which does imply that there is something untoward going on outside the property. My neighbour has also mentioned issues with their connection recently too - May be pure coincidence, but maybe not.

As mentioned in my original post, the offshore virgin representative I spoke to went throught the usual questions, and said that they are not seeing any faults in the area, and I'm currently looking at a FOUR WEEK wait for an engineer visit - 29th December!

This is unworkable, as both myself and my wife work from home half the week each - I have to remote into my work PC, and each time I get one of these dropouts it either makes my connection unresponsive or kicks me out altogether. It also means it is out of action over Xmas holiday... I've been one of the lucky ones and always had a great experience with Virgin, but this is simply not good enough.

Do Virgin staff check this site - If so, and you do read this thread, I would really appreciate your help in escalating this issue please?

Your down powers are too low and too widespread and the PostRS errors are unacceptable - usually indicates noise ingress.

Call in a book a Tech visit to investigate

Hi @gingamonkey, thanks for getting back to me privately.
I have booked you in for the next available appointment. To view this please sign into My Virgin Media here: My VM. Once you log in scroll down to Orders & appointments then click on View your orders. You can also view this in the My VM app. If you have any issues with accessing your account or unable to see your visit, please do let us know and we’ll pop you a message to pass data protection and confirm the appointment details.
Just to confirm, there will be no charge for this visit unless:
The technician diagnoses the faults as not being caused by our network/equipment
The technician discovers that the fault or problem relates to your equipment
The technician discovers that the fault or problem relates to any system that we are not responsible for
The technician will confirm during their visit if any of these instances apply, and if so, a £25 charge will be applied to your account.
Please ensure that someone over the age of 18 is at the property for the time the engineer is there. If the appointment is unsuitable or if anyone living at your property has tested positive for Coronavirus, has been asked to self-isolate or has flu-like symptoms then please reschedule the appointment on the same link. If you do miss the appointment for any reason, a £25 missed appointment charge will be applied to your account on the day of the appointment, so it is important to reschedule if needed.
Do please let us know how the appointment goes.

Regards
