I can't connect desktop PC to the internet using an ethernet cable.

Hi there,

I'm having a weird problem:

 - I've had Virgin fibre BB for 10 days now, having just moved house

 - I can connect to the web OK on my phone using WiFi, and my smart TV connects to the web via an ethernet cable

 - However when I plug my desktop tower PC to the router with an ethernet cable, I can't connect to the web... (My desktop has no wifi capability)

 - Windows network diagnostics says the connection between my PC and router is OK, but the connection between the router and the web is not connected

 - I have spoken to Virgin technical services but they have been no help - they even suggested I pay £5 per month for 'Gadget Rescue'...

 - My desktop PC worked OK on Sky BB 2 weeks ago, before I moved house, so I'm sure the PC is working OK - besides, I thought you could access the web easily if a PC is connected to a router with an ethernet cable.

Any ideas anyone ? I've never had this issue with any ethernet-connected PC / internet provider before, and as I've said, Virgin are clueless.

Thanks

Sean

What model make is your PC? do you know what motherboard or NIC it has?

Can you run cmd
ping 8.8.8.8
nslookup bbc.co.uk
nslookup bbc.co.uk 8.8.8.8

Re: I can't connect desktop PC to the internet using an ethernet cable.

Hi there,

ping 8.8.8.8

 - Reply from 8.8.8.8 bytes = 32 time = 29ms TTL = 119(x3)

nslookup bbc.co.uk

 - Server unknown address 192.168.0.1 DNS request timed out, timeout was 2 s. Can't find bbc.co.uk, no response from server.

nslookup bbc.co.uk 8.8.8.8

 - Non authoritative answer:

 - Name:bbc.co.uk

 - Addresses: 4 set of IP addresses (151.101.192.01 / 0.01 / 128.01 / 64.01)

My PC is a fairly old GLite, I don't know what cards it has, but as I mentioned, I had no issues with Sky BB.

Thanks !

Sean

It would seem VM DNS in your area is the issue.

Change your DNS on PC to 8.8.8.8, 9.9.9.9, 1.1.1.1

Re: I can't connect desktop PC to the internet using an ethernet cable.

Great ! But....

I am sort-of-connecting to the web now, but Firefox isn't displaying the websites - I get 'Your connection is not secure' screens whenever I try. It says www.ebay etc has not configured their website properly...

Any ideas ?

Many thanks for your help up to now - I have to go out now for a few hours but will try to get 100% connected and browsing when I return.

Thanks

Sean

Re: I can't connect desktop PC to the internet using an ethernet cable.

Yes - I have - but I noticed that the clock was set to 2002 - so I changed the clock to today and the correct time (give or take a few seconds) and bingo ! Everything seems to work - I can connect tot he web OK, all websites work and there are no error messages !

Thank you so much for your help - really appreciated ! I'd never have gotten to the bottom of this problem (neither would Virgin !) - so well done !

Thanks and best regards

Sean
