Hub Red Light - why is my wifi slow and intermittent?

I joined Virgin Media in February and initially was great. For the past month, wifi has been slow and buffering at times - even on the tv which is plugged into the router. The red light is constantly on and I have read this might mean overheating but the box is not enclosed and I can’t seem to fix this. 
Finding chat bot is slow and unhelpful and I can’t find a contact number for customer services. Does anyone know what I can do to fix this? Do I have a faulty hub?
