Custom DNS or Modem Mode on the Hub5X

Hi All,

I have just been ported over to Virgin from UPP and am having trouble configuring the network..

I want to set a custom DNS for the DHCP clients so that I can use my own PiHole or just use another router to do this (without double NAT) via setting the hub5x into modem only mode..

I seem to be able to do neither..

Prior to the transition the UPP Engineers assured this was doable; when I couldnt find it after the install I contacted support and after a ~80 minute run around I was told to wait 24-48 hrs and the option would appear in the router after an update..

48 hrs later it has not..

Any ideas ?

Thanks,

Slaz

The 5x is heavily tied down. Just browse down this forum looking for Hub 5x Modem Mode. You won't have to look far.

My name is NOT Alessandro. That's just a tag Virginmedia sticks on some contributors. Please ignore it.

I've read a few that say its not available, some that say it is..

I'd hope it is, otherwise both UPP and Virgin have lied to me

Can the DHCP server be disabled on the Hub 5x ?

If Yes, an alternate DHCP server could be used to hand out the IPs & DNS of choice e.g. the PiHole or OpenDNS etc.

It isn't - and no firm plans for when it might become available

I do not work for VM. My services: HD TV on VIP (+ Sky Sports & Movies & TNT sport), x3 V6 boxes (1 wired, 2 on WiFi), Hub5 in modem mode with Apple Airport Extreme Router +2 Airport Express's & TP-Link Archer C64 WAP. On Volt 350Mbps, Talk Anytime Phone, x2 Mobile SIM only iPhones.

I did try disabling the DHCP and running my own on the pihole but the wifi-extender failed to work; its on the list to check this weekend

Well Virginmedia's sales people are known to promise anything to get a sale. Plenty of posts on here to demonstrate that.

There are partial ways around this but they seem to have drawbacks. VM could at any time send out a new firmware that may release modem mode, or defeat any customer 'interference' with its operation.

You have 14 days to decide whether to cancel.

"the wifi-extender failed to work"   - there is no reason for a Retail Wi-Fi extender failing to work with your own DHCP server.

If you are referring to VM Pods, I'd suggest retire those ASAP as you clearly wish to be able to manage your network and a VM Pods is locked down and worse imposes a range of VM prescribed settings on the VM Hub.

I do plan on retiring them, I have a full setup that I want to get working; I'm aware that I might be in the minority; but all I want from an ISP is a connection and nothing else
