Asus RT-AC1200G with Superhub 3 - WAN IP address dropping

Hi all,

I've finally decided to replace my superhub 3 with a 3rd party Asus RT-AC1200G+. Mainly for better wifi coverage and stability. So far so good on that front.

The issue I'm facing is that the WAN IP address on the Asus router seems to periodically drop off. It will be assigned a public IP (in my case 94.X.X.X) from the SH3 in modem mode, but intermittently the connection will drop and the WAN IP shows as a local 192.168.100.X address.

If I leave it alone, it will eventually pick up a public IP again. Rebooting the router doesn't seem to make any difference. Or the SH3 modem. I've left all of the WAN settings on default (DHCP) shown in the picture.

Any suggestions?

Re: Asus RT-AC1200G with Superhub 3 - WAN IP address dropping

This usually means that the modem is resetting. The 192.168.100.x (usually 20) address is the initialisation stage when the router binds to the modem.

You might care to copy/paste your downstream & upstream modem stats so we can see if there is anything obvious that's going wrong in the circuit. The Network Log also.

Thanks Sephiroth,

I'll pull the stats from my modem tomorrow and paste the results.

Re: Asus RT-AC1200G with Superhub 3 - WAN IP address dropping

Hi Sephiroth, VM Staff,

Looks like the problem is here to stay. Modem keeps resetting/initialising. I've pulled my modem stats from the hub3 shown below. Thanks!

Edit: The network log entries from the 5th Feb is likely me manually rebooting the router after shuffling the power cables around and making sure everything was physically in place/secure.

Re: Asus RT-AC1200G with Superhub 3 - WAN IP address dropping

Thanks. Looking at reboots at around 04:00, the SYNC and RCS messages suggest a possible problem in the downstream at that particular time. There is nothing in the power/noise levels snapshot that indicates a problem, though.

I hope that the VM bods when they get to this thread have the tools to examine what's happening in greater detail.

Did you get to the bottom of this in the end?

Re: Asus RT-AC1200G with Superhub 3 - WAN IP address dropping

I did! I've installed a couple of firmware updates for the router since I originally posted and it seems to have fixed the issue.

Re: Asus RT-AC1200G with Superhub 3 - WAN IP address dropping

My RT-N66U appears to be doing the same thing and I'm running the latest firmware for it. Even got VM to replace the modem as well.

Re: Asus RT-AC1200G with Superhub 3 - WAN IP address dropping

Hmmm. That's not good. The only other steps I took after the firmware update was to factory reset both the modem and router and setup from scratch. A pain in the backside but it worked.
