How I do I find out whether my sim only contract is 12 months or not? or will I have to call VM?
log into your Virgin Mobile account then click on the "Plan and device" tab.

If you took the plan out before 3rd July 2017 then you'd be on a 30 day rolling contract.
Can make calls, but no data? Check your "Virgin Mobile APN settings"
