Problem with 'refer a friend'

I referred a friend via text as per the instructions and they were duly contacted and signed up to Virgin in August. They have paid their first bill.  Neither of us has heard anything about the #50 credit since and I'm now wondering what's gone wrong and why the delay and lack of communication.  I've searched the Virgin website which isn't helpful and sends me round in circles and am feeling that I might have been mislead.
