Hey all, I've set up a little standing order to cover my bill. The payments are showing up on my account as credits and my account is all up to date. But I keep getting hit by direct debit for an amount, the amount varies for some reason, and I don't have a direct debit set up.

If you've set up a standing order that covers the amount the bill is then no Direct Debit should be taken, if the bill comes through as more than the amount you've set up for the standing order then the remaining balance would be taken via Direct Debit.
You would have a Direct Debit set up for this to be happening however, this is usually set up when you first take out the services.
The amount of your bill can change due to extra services like a premium rate call or buying a movie, so if the amount is over the standing order then the rest would be taken by Direct Debit and one would be set up for this to happen.

Maybe you thought you cancelled the Direct Debit with VM. That’s not the way to cancel a Direct Debit, the correct way is to cancel it with your bank, VM cannot do this. Unless it is cancelled with your bank it is still in existence, perhaps for ever, even if VM do not call for any funds.
