Telephone keeps chiming and cannot dial out.

Hi All

Lately one of my telephones connected to my router has started chiming every hour or two. It just makes a short chiming sound and then stops. In addition to this I am sometimes unable to dial out to a mobile and get an engaged tone even though I later discover that the mobile I was calling wasn't being used at the time of the call. Anybody got any ideas whats going on here? Do I have a line fault?

Thanks

Hi 337edy2, thanks for the message and sorry to hear that the phone is chiming.

I can assure you that you are not being monitored by us and would ask to confirm if the handset is plugged in the wall or the hub.

Have you been able to try an alternative handset to see if you get the same issue as this looks like it is a handset fault and not a service fault.

I'll try another handset. Upstairs phone plugged into router. Downstairs into wall socket that is directly wired to the dual outlet from one port in the back of the router. Basically, the number 1 port in router has a splitter on it to enable the use of two phones.

Thanks for getting back to us @337edy2

Have you managed to test with an alternative handset?  Could I suggest, definitely keep handset that you know to be working, where it is?  If you do not have a spare, to save money, are there any friends or family members you could borrow a handset from?  Also, have you checked here, for any tips or guidance?

Regards

And, out of interest, what is the make and model number/name of the phone that keeps 'chiming'?

We're here to help, when you've got time @337edy2.

Hi

Just thought I'd get back to you regarding the chiming of my phone. I'm not so sure this is a fault with either of my handsets. Both handsets were perfectly fine in operation upon being connected to the hub for quite a while. I was sitting by one of my phones the other day and I heard the chime come from the downstairs phone and I noticed that my phone upstairs was displaying that it was receiving an incoming call so I picked up the handset. I heard nothing. I left it another couple of days and when looking at my phone it registers approximately 25 missed calls a day. When I scroll through the list of calls, they all show 'NO NUMBER' and the timing seems to be a sequence. All the times of the calls end in a '2'. For example 06:22 or 07.32 or 08.42 then it will go back to 09.22 then 10.32 then 11.42 etc. That's not a handset fault! This looks to me something like what a programmed machine would do. It's a type of machine code or something.

I don't suppose you happen to have a Hub 5 and a BT phone do you, as per this topic (which sounds rather similar)?

https://community.virginmedia.com/t5/Home-Phone/Constant-quot-no-number-calls-quot-since-moving-to-I...

messages #9, #32, #33, #56 mentions exact timings

and this one

at message #19 mentioning exact timings of calls

and this topic mentions calls every 2 hours

Thank you for your post 337edy2,

Hi

I've had a quick look through those links and they appear to be experiencing the same problems. I have recently been upgraded to a hub 5. I don't believe my handsets are at fault here. Is there a solution to this problem? Does this present a security risk?

Have you tried different handsets to confirm this?

We could send a tech out but if it is your equipment you will be charged for the visit.
