I have received messages about the switch. My phone is in the lounge, the hub in the study some distance away. I don't have a wireless phone, it's plugged in the lounge where we can hear it, we can't hear it if it's in the study. Will I have to buy a dual phone that is linked wirelessly? and if so will VM compensate me for the cost?

Have a read of this link, if you have not done so already, on what VM 'say' they will do at switchover and the sections on extension sockets and equipment in different rooms. Couldn't be clearer IMO

Different customers get different answers on the matter of reconnecting phone extensions. It's a total lottery answer for each person who enquires, which seems to be influenced by having an existing phone socket next to the hub (in which case VM can easily plug in an adapter lead to make the old extensions live again). See this answer from yesterday about what VM's default method seems to be (when a phone socket is nearby)

Worth noting that if you have any other equipment connected to the line (burglar alarms, medical/care devices etc.) they will become disconnected at switchover unless you link them into the hub phone socket.
You have a few choices. You could argue it out with VM to connect your extension socket as they say they will. You could get a local contractor to make the connection for you (electrician, independent telecoms tech etc.). You could do a DIY conversion (as described at the link below from @iamSteve if you have the necessary skills)

If you want to keep the line you could go cordless (which is the simplest route).
You could get rid of the landline altogether. That's what I shall be doing when the phone is switched, as the reincarnated 21CV line will not have the dual redundancy/separation from the broadband which the current phone line does so will be a largely pointless thing IMO.
In fact, as I am typing this, a BT sales rep has just knocked on the door to see if I would like to swap to FTTP which is now available in the street. Unfortunately, VM seem to be a bit slow on the uptake that comparable speed alternatives are increasingly available and irking customers with quibbles over connecting phone extension sockets during the switchover process is quite likely to push many to simply ditch the landline altogether and/or jump ship from VM.
Hope you can resolve the matter to a satisfactory conclusion.
