You need to request 'porting' of the number to retain it. Sky was able to port the number within a day or so, but when I rejoined virgin it has taken nearly a month and interminable hours with online chat help with repeated transfer dates given and no transfer with the possibility of losing the number if too much delay (what a hassle changing a number would be) however finally changed in the nick of time, virgin services fine but "oh dear " if you need help, so difficult and time consuming.
