Similar situation to my aged mother (housebound at 100yrs young).
Purchase a basic mobile phone that has an SOS feature, any problems with the Virgin phones my mum presses the SOS button which in turn connects to a user selected number!
[Even has a torch inbuilt in the phone to reassure mum during hours of darkness]
