Home phone not working

I have no dial tone on my home phone. I have unplugged and replugged. It uses an old style socket with no hub. I am elderly and feel vulnerable without my home phone because I don't use a mobile. The virgin media help pages just show bad gateway when I try to access them. On check status it shows my postcode (West Yorkshire) to be OK and working when I know it isn't. This has happened before, but I forget how it got resolved. I know Virgin admitted it was their problem causing the fault when check status showed it was OK and it wasn't OK. How can I get in touch with an engineer to get this fault sorted, because there is nothing I can do and I'm feeling desperate, not understanding the technology and jargon people use.
