Can I move to VoIP?

Luqybb91
Dialled in

Could someone from virgin check if voip is available in my area? I was originally worried about voip's reliability issues, but I've changed my mind. My Internet almost never goes down (wifi does, but not the incoming line), but even if it did, everyone in the home has a smartphone, so emergency calls are't really a problem.

The differences between VOIP benefits and 21CV are highlighted here by @nodrogd in this recent topic

21CV is just a means of connecting customers' analogue equipment to the VM IP network.

This was also outlined when you last asked about it back in November last year

Just to point out. Virgins new hub based phone service is not true VoIP. All the new service (21CV) does at present is replace the phone socket & twisted pair wiring to the cabinet with a radio based system using the hub. There are no changes at the headend exchanges.

Virgin is now in a staged switchover phase. So new customers & house movers are getting this 21CV service first, followed by existing customers when capacity allows.

Hi @Luqybb91,

Thank you very much for your post. I've had a quick look into your account to look into this for you and can see that you would be eligible for our VoIP service 🙂

This is not something we are able to change for you via forums however, so I'd advise you to get in touch with our customer services and request to be put through to '21CV' or 'VoIP' team, they can arrange this for you.

Let us know how you get on and do get in touch if you need any assistance in the future!

Thanks,

Hi Molly. Thank you very much. I only needed confirmation if it's available in my area, and you've done just that. It may be a while before I make the change, but I'm hoping to move asap.

Can you provide the source of this information? From what I know, another name for coax cable is RF cable (radio frequency cable). So I would receive my Internet over one frequency and send voice over another, so what's not 'true' about Virgin's Voip service? Wouldn't the same frequency division happen even over fibre?

Hi @Luqybb91,

The information I'm able to access on this is whether the feature is compatible in different areas - I do also know that the voice and data are sent via different channels within the connection. Hopefully our wonderful community might be able to shed some further light on the technicalities of this for you, along with our 21CV team 🙂

Thanks!

Thanks. I was responding to what nodrogd said, he seems certain about what he's saying so I thought maybe he'd have a source for that information. I could probably find out more on the tech chatter forum. I see a lot of the engineers and techies hang out there.

But nodrogd can't use himself as a source, and the others seem to be repeating what nodrogd is saying without providing any evidence either. I unfortunately couldn't find much on the Internet, but from the little I have learned (and also read from another member on this forum), is that 21CV is a programme, or project title, and not a technology, and mass deployment of VoIP by replacing TDM switches with IP switches is the goal of that project.

Also, what were you trying to prove with this link https://www.virginmedia.com/help/home-phone/virginphone#what ? If you were trying to say, that only new builds with fibre infrastructure, or customers living in areas where fttp has been deployed can use voip, then that would be false. Voip should work over both copper and optical fibre.

Anyway, I'm going to open up a new thread in tech chatter so it can be discussed properly over there.
