Repeated Lag and Jitter during online gaming

internetuser123
Tuning in

Ping is typically 20-40ms before starting an online game but I get repeated in-game warnings during playing that there is fluctuating high jitter/ping.

The resulting lag makes parts of the game unplayable.

Speedtest:

  • Download: 110Mbps
  • Upload: 8.62Mbps
  • Ping: 19ms

(My Virgin router is in modem mode)

Stats and log look okay.   You need to setup a BQM here  www.thinkbroadband.com/ping

This will monitor the state of your broadband circuit and may help diagnose any issues.  Once you have it setup and populated for 24 hours, come back here and post the "Shared" link so we can comment.

Thanks for the reply.

This is a little over 24 hours now:

Another thing to think about and I know it sounds stupid but have you also tried testing with a different ethernet cable at the very least it might help with some of the jitter because some ethernet manufactures straight up lie about the spec of their cables.

Not stupid at all! Hadn’t thought about that actually but it’s a good spec cable I accidentally picked up from work

Hi internetuser123, thanks for posting.

Sorry to hear about the issues you've had when gaming. Have you been able to test how things are when in router mode, do you experience the same lag/jitter?

Tom

Hi there

I don’t want to undo the router config to be honest, scared I’d never get the setup back!

I bought the extra router in the first place as the Virgin one had poor coverage around the house.

It’s possible then it’s my non-virgin router that’s a problem?

We can certainly appreciate that internetuser123.

At this point in time we wouldn't be able to say if the 3rd party router is causing the issue or not.

To be able to completely rule this out, we would need you to disconnect this and try without your 3rd party hub.
