Lag whilst gaming

I'm currently on the 350 wifi. Been with virgin for just over a month now and already experience bad problems when playing online games. Large lag spikes and a massive increase in ping. I live on my own so its generally only my laptop that will be using the WiFi whilst gaming so not due to other users. Used the app to test the WiFi in my bedroom and it says its great. How can I stop this?

if you havent already disable channel optimisation (smart wifi) and give each wifi band its own name.

Worth checking that the broadband is performing properly - latency (lag, ping) issues are more commonly caused by that than wifi.

Connect to the hub by clicking on this link http://192.168.0.1/  That should pull up the log in page for the hub.  But don't log in, just click on the link "Check router status"  That'll bring up a window with five tabs.  Open the Downstream tab.  Select all the text (Ctrl-A if using a keyboard), copy it (Ctrl-C), then paste it (Ctrl-V) into a reply here as TEXT not screenshots.  Post that, do the same for the Upstream and Network log.  You'll get an error message when you post the Network log, just click on "post" a second time.  Then we can check for any obvious problems with power, noise or error counts, ideally after the hub has been running for a good few hours or a day or so without a restart.

Gaming via WiFi will always have higher latency than playing via a hard wired connection.

my recommand is not to use wifi for online gaming all my stuff is hard wired to network switches then to the router its depends on the home server you picked to game on usa will be high on lag pair to EU side no one says this but its true try and game online with EU servers not usa servers usa servers is like 150ms ping thats high to 30ms ping to EU servers

Hi Leb2021,

Thanks for using the forums to get this issue with your broadband looked into, I am sorry if this has been causing some frustration. I would be more than happy to look into this for you.

We would always recommend connecting a gaming console/laptop/PC with an Ethernet cable so that you get the best possible connection for your games.

I have a link here which will give you loads more information on why WIFI isn't the best option for a fast gaming connection - Wireless or Wired?

WIFI can be very variable due to the nature of the WIFI waves & disruptions within the home.

Are you able to connect your laptop up with an Ethernet cable? If you do not have one, you can purchase one from reputable sources like Amazon, supermarkets, IT stores.

Please let me know.

Thanks,

Megan_L

What is this thing called "LAG".

I am on the 1Gig VM service, SH4 is in modem mode, with an ASUS router, and my PC / PS5 and PS4pro are all Wired.

Never have an issue, when online gaming.

Running on 1Gbps VM service with SH4 in Modem Mode, with a ASUS GT-AX6000 router. With this setup I get Fantastic WIRED and WIRELESS Signals in my home. I dont work for VM. But I work in IT, and I know my tech.
